Local Teens Gather to Show Tobacco Industry They've "Seen Enough!"
On May 31, 2011, more than 30 local teenagers gathered at Clarence High School for an event to spread awareness of the dangers of in-store tobacco marketing.
The event, held in conjunction with World No Tobacco Day, featured youth speaking out against the tobacco industry's marketing to children, as well as individuals who wrote "I've seen enough" on their hands and covering their eyes for photographs.
Students from Clarence and Kenmore West high schools and representatives from the Amherst Youth Consortium, Reality Check and the Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition participated in the event.
The Erie-Niagara Tobacco-Free Coalition launched a social media campaign on Facebook and Twitter in connection with this international initiative. Participants changed their Facebook statuses to "I've Seen Enough!" to reflect their opposition to the tobacco industry's marketing toward children. Twitter users tweeted the same message, using the hashtag "#WorldNoTobaccoDay." Members of the Yroswell Street Team (pictured above) were among the many young people who showed their support of this initiative.
Additionally, a petition in support of reducing the visibility of tobacco marketing to children has been created on http://www.tobaccofreenys.org/ and has gathered more than 250 signatures.
